About

What on Earth is a funny looking slot machine from Microgaming, which has its focus on space and on aliens that come from there, but which also uses the classic fruits as comets, planets and suns, among other things. I’ll give Microgaming points for originality with this title, though I’m not happy at all with the design, which is a result of this game being quite old. What on Earth is giving us only 9 active lines each round, and you can get them when you’re spinning the slot’s 5 reels. The combinations which can form on those lines can bring you rewards which reach $75,000 in value. You get from this game scatter symbols, wilds and features like Beam ‘em Bonus and Destination Bonus.

What on Earth

Betting requirements

This is one of those games where you get to control the wager’s every aspect. Though you have only 9 lines inside, you can select as many of them as you want, to be active each round. Next, you can select a maximum of 5 coins, for use on each line. The coin value is getting a value from the range of $0.01 to $2, so you can spend up to $10 per line total, and up to $90 for the entire round.

Theme & Design

What on Earth has a couple of themes which were mixed together, even though they’re not normally associated. The alien theme is one of them, and you see it in the alien creatures which appear to be invading Earth. There are UFO’s on those reels, along with rocket ships, alien creatures, logos and ship controls. The side of the game which feels unusual is the one where you get classic fruit icons, but transformed into astral bodies. You get a watermelon as a planet with satellites around it, a plum as a planet with a ring, an orange as the Sun, or the cherry on fire, looking like a comet. Both the fruit related planets and the aliens that are looking to invade bring their fair share of comedy to the slot. It’s funny, but since it looks like a very old slot machine, it’s got a dated design and I didn’t find it that easy to enjoy. There appears to be a star filled background in there as well, behind the reels, but you don’t really get to see much of it.

Special Features

There are several symbols in What on Earth, that will have extra roles to fill, or which will behave in a different way than most symbols. The wild symbol is definitely one of those, and its importance is even bigger if you stop to consider the kind of payouts that can come your way with its help. In most rounds where the wild makes appearances, you will be able to have it act as a replacement, so you will get one extra win thanks to it, or an improved one if it adds a symbol. Having one to five wild symbols, the ones with the logos, arranged from the left to the right, will get you paid anywhere from 4x to 7,500x. There is a big downside as well to this wild though, the fact that there are only two symbols that it can replace, and those two are high paying icons which you don’t see on the reels that often. There are several scatter symbols in there which will only be used to get you prizes. It’s the case with the Blue Shuttle or the Green UFO, symbols which appear scattered on three reels and pay 3x total bet. The Red Rocket does better, appearing on up to 5 reels and offering up to 100x total bet. These scatters can all trigger the bonus game, which is offered whenever they get you a cash prize (when 3 or more are present on the reels). The feature is called Beam ‘em Up Bonus. The rewards coming from this bonus game vary between 3x and 200x the line bet. You can also get from it invites to other bonus features, additional levels called Beam em Up Contest and Destination Bonus. The first one asks you to beam up earthlings, and the more you get, the bigger your score and your prize. With Destination Bonus, you have to locate certain earthlings, and in exchange you get rewards of up to 400x.

What on Earth

Jackpot

We know that there is a jackpot of 7,500x on the line, if you form a combination which has five Wild Logos in it. You get paid up to $75,000 thanks to them. The 95.98% average RTP I would consider good for a slot machine and in line with the usual offer from Microgaming.

Conclusion

What on Earth has some good arguments to make for itself, but humor and big payouts can only take you so far. I’m not happy with the features, the wild one especially, and the graphics are pretty old.
