Soccer Safari has been released back in 2010, as a slot machine dedicated to the Soccer World Cup that took place that year, in South Africa. Whenever there is a new World Cup or European Championship about to start, and there is one of those once every two years, there are new soccer themed slot machines released. Soccer Safari is the one that South Africa got, a game which has wild animals in the role of the players. For Soccer Safari, the developer chose to use 30 active lines and to have them spread across 5 reels. You get a jackpot of $24,000 if you’re among the luckiest players to give it a try. Features include the wild symbols, the scatters, free spins with locked wild reels and a bonus game.
This is the sort of game that gives you control, but which also uses a lot of coins in its wagers. You have as many as 20 coins that you can use for just one active line. With a maximum of 30 active lines, your bets can have up to 600 coins in them. The coin value isn’t that high though, getting up to $0.20 at most, so you can spend at most $120 each spin. The minimum bet can be as low as $0.01 though.
The theme is connected to the 2010 World Cup, as I mentioned, and so it relies for its soccer players and its other characters on wild animals from Africa. The style of the design is cartoon like, so not overly realistic, and the action takes place on a stadium. The thing to appreciate here is the dedication to the theme when it comes to the chosen symbols, since you’re not getting any poker icons or card suits, just images of wild animals that take on different roles, from that of the referee, to the fans, players and broadcasters. For example, one of the symbols offered shows you the World Cup, another one has a Zebra as a referee that’s showing a red card, a logo, and then there are lions, rhinos, leopards, boars, hyenas, an ox, giraffes, meerkats and elephants. These are all the symbols available in the game, and the reels appear quite crowded as a result, especially since most symbols show more than one of these animals.
In this case, the symbol that Microgaming chose to give substitution abilities to is the one sporting the slot’s logo. The wild symbol is useful in the usual way, being a replacement for other symbols, capable of contributing to multiple combinations at the same time, even if they have different types of symbols in them. The wild does need to be in the right position in order to be of any use to you though. The ideal situation remains the one where you get three to five wilds arranged to form their own combo, since they pay up to 2,000x at that point. The Zebra Referee symbol, the one where he is shown with the red card in his hoof, is the scatter that gets you the free spins, one of two symbols that have the ability to appear anywhere on a reel and still be useful. In the case of this particular scatter, only the 1st and 5th reels can get it, and to trigger 5 free spins you need it present on both. Those two reels will become wild and locked into position for the next 5 spins, so only the three from the middle will spin for you. Not all games manage to offer a bonus game as well, but this one does it. It triggers this feature through a Bonus symbol which appears as a scatter, showing a Trophy in it. The bonus game is accessed when you have three or more Trophies on the reels, and it’s the kind of feature where you have to shoot the ball from the penalty spot. There are rewards to be had in this bonus game, which can apparently reach 60,000 coins. The scattered Trophies have prizes to give away as well, offering up to 200 times the wager, which can mean up to 120,000 coins, or $24,000.
The scatter symbols with the Trophy image on them will pay best, up to $24,000, as I just mentioned. The regular combinations do considerably worse, offering at most $8,000, or 2,000x the line bet. In terms of how profitable the game is for the casino, it offers an average RTP that is similar to what you expect to get from any Microgaming slot machine. At around 96%, I’d consider it a decent title.
Soccer Safari is offering players a decent cartoon inspired design, a focus on soccer that should bring it plenty of fans thanks to the popularity of this sport, and some cool features.
